Course Introduction

Nutrition-sensitive agriculture is increasingly recognized as a vital approach to improving food security and public health, particularly in rural areas where undernutrition and diet-related health challenges remain widespread. This course emphasizes the integration of agricultural practices with nutritional outcomes, ensuring that farming systems contribute not only to food availability but also to better diets and healthier communities.

Participants will explore how rural agricultural strategies can be aligned with nutrition goals through diversification, biofortification, and promotion of nutrient-rich crops. The course also examines the importance of gender-sensitive approaches and equitable access to resources that empower women and smallholder farmers as central actors in nutrition-sensitive systems.

Through real-world case studies, the training highlights successful models where agriculture has been leveraged to reduce malnutrition and improve community health. Special attention will be given to aligning agricultural productivity with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being).

The program also delves into the role of value chains, markets, and food environments in shaping dietary choices in rural communities. By integrating behavioral change communication and nutrition education, the course equips participants with strategies to influence household-level decisions that impact nutrition.

A forward-looking component of the course addresses climate-smart agriculture and the impact of environmental change on food and nutrition security. Participants will gain insights into how to design resilient systems that promote both sustainable production and nutritional outcomes.

Ultimately, this course builds the technical knowledge and practical skills required to design, implement, and evaluate agricultural interventions that prioritize nutrition, empower rural households, and strengthen community resilience.
