Course Introduction

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial analytics have transformed the way NGOs monitor, evaluate, and manage development and humanitarian programs. By integrating spatial data into monitoring systems, organizations can visualize program reach, identify gaps, and make evidence-based decisions. This course equips participants with practical skills to apply GIS tools in monitoring program performance and improving development outcomes.

Traditional monitoring systems often rely on numerical and narrative data that may not fully capture geographic disparities in service delivery. GIS adds a powerful spatial dimension that allows NGOs to map interventions, track coverage, and analyze patterns of inequality. This course introduces participants to spatial thinking as a core component of modern monitoring and evaluation systems.

In many development contexts, location-based data is critical for understanding vulnerability, accessibility, and resource distribution. NGOs working in sectors such as health, education, WASH, and humanitarian response increasingly rely on spatial analytics to optimize service delivery. This course demonstrates how spatial data can be used to enhance program targeting and efficiency.

The growing availability of satellite imagery, mobile data, and open-source GIS platforms has made spatial analytics more accessible than ever before. However, many organizations still lack the technical capacity to integrate these tools into their monitoring frameworks. This course bridges that gap by providing hands-on training in GIS applications for development programming.

Spatial analytics also plays a key role in emergency response and disaster management, where timely and accurate geographic information is essential. NGOs must be able to visualize affected areas, allocate resources efficiently, and monitor recovery processes. Participants will learn how GIS supports rapid decision-making in dynamic and complex environments.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to design GIS-based monitoring systems, analyze spatial data, create maps for program tracking, and apply spatial insights to improve development outcomes. The course blends theory, practical exercises, and real-world case studies.
