Course Introduction

Operational risk management is a critical function for NGOs operating in volatile, uncertain, and resource-constrained environments. Organizations face risks ranging from financial mismanagement and security threats to compliance failures and program disruptions. This course equips participants with practical tools to identify, assess, and mitigate operational risks effectively.

In many NGOs, risk management systems are either weak or inconsistently applied, leading to project delays, reputational damage, and loss of donor confidence. Without structured risk assessment frameworks, organizations struggle to anticipate and respond to emerging threats. This training strengthens institutional capacity to build proactive risk management systems.

Risk assessment is not only about identifying threats but also understanding their likelihood, impact, and interdependencies. Effective mitigation requires structured planning and prioritization of risks based on evidence and context. Participants will learn how to apply systematic risk assessment methodologies tailored to NGO operations.

Operational risks in NGOs are often multidimensional, including security risks in field operations, financial fraud risks, procurement inefficiencies, and governance weaknesses. Managing these risks requires integrated planning and coordination across departments. This course provides frameworks for holistic risk management across organizational systems.

Mitigation planning is essential for ensuring continuity of programs and safeguarding organizational resources. It involves designing preventive measures, response strategies, and contingency plans. Participants will learn how to develop practical mitigation plans that enhance organizational resilience and accountability.

By the end of the training, participants will be able to conduct comprehensive risk assessments, develop mitigation strategies, and strengthen organizational risk governance systems. The course combines theoretical foundations, practical tools, and real-world case studies from the NGO sector.
