Course Introduction
Leadership continuity is one of the most critical determinants of long-term organizational success and sustainability within the nonprofit and development sector. NGOs frequently face challenges arising from leadership transitions, retirement of founding leaders, staff turnover, governance changes, and institutional restructuring. Without effective succession planning and continuity systems, organizations risk losing institutional knowledge, weakening stakeholder confidence, disrupting program delivery, and compromising strategic objectives. This course provides participants with practical frameworks and tools for developing leadership succession strategies that ensure organizational stability, resilience, and sustained impact.
Many NGOs depend heavily on a small number of senior leaders whose vision, expertise, relationships, and institutional knowledge are central to organizational success. However, leadership transitions are inevitable and must be proactively managed to avoid operational disruptions and governance challenges. Effective succession planning goes beyond replacing individuals and focuses on creating leadership pipelines, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring the transfer of critical knowledge and organizational values. Participants will learn how to build succession systems that support both short-term continuity and long-term organizational growth.
