Course Introduction

Nature-based solutions (NbS) for climate resilience represent an innovative and sustainable approach to addressing climate change challenges by leveraging natural ecosystems. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of how ecosystems such as forests, wetlands, rivers, and coastal zones can be restored and managed to reduce climate risks and enhance resilience.

Climate change is intensifying the frequency and severity of floods, droughts, storms, and heatwaves, placing immense pressure on communities and ecosystems. This course explores how nature-based solutions can reduce vulnerability by strengthening ecosystem services that regulate water, stabilize soil, and moderate climate impacts.

Participants will gain practical knowledge on designing, implementing, and managing nature-based interventions such as reforestation, mangrove restoration, watershed management, and urban green infrastructure. The course emphasizes real-world applications that integrate ecological science with development planning.

Policy frameworks and global climate agreements increasingly recognize nature-based solutions as cost-effective and scalable climate strategies. This course examines how governments, NGOs, and private sector actors can mainstream NbS into climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction planning.

Community engagement is central to successful implementation of nature-based solutions. The course highlights participatory approaches that involve local communities in ecosystem restoration, conservation, and sustainable land management practices that support livelihoods and resilience.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design and evaluate nature-based solutions that enhance climate resilience, protect biodiversity, and support sustainable development across urban and rural landscapes.
