Introduction

The agriculture sector is the backbone of most developing economies, contributing significantly to employment, food security, and poverty reduction. However, the complexity of modern agricultural value chains from production to consumption requires systematic Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) frameworks that ensure sustainability, inclusiveness, and efficiency. This course provides participants with the knowledge and practical tools to design, implement, and manage robust M&E systems for agriculture value chains and food systems.

As global food systems evolve, integrating M&E in agricultural programs has become vital for measuring performance, tracking results, and identifying opportunities for growth and resilience. Participants will explore how to assess interventions across various value chain components such as production, processing, distribution, and marketing using data-driven and evidence-based approaches. The course highlights how M&E can drive productivity, competitiveness, and sustainability in agricultural investments and food systems.

Participants will gain a deep understanding of how agricultural M&E frameworks contribute to improved policy decisions, resource allocation, and program effectiveness. They will learn to align M&E designs with key global frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA), and Food Systems Transformation Initiatives to enhance their organizations’ impact on food security and economic growth.

Through practical exercises and real-world case studies, the course equips learners to design indicators, conduct performance evaluations, and apply participatory data collection tools to capture the full range of agricultural outcomes. The sessions emphasize integrating gender, youth, and environmental perspectives into agricultural M&E systems.

Emerging trends in agricultural monitoring, including digital data tools, remote sensing, and big data analytics, are explored to prepare participants for the digital transformation of food systems. These innovations are reshaping how agricultural programs are monitored, evaluated, and scaled for sustainability and resilience.

By the end of this course, participants will have the confidence to design adaptive, results-based M&E systems that enhance productivity, ensure accountability, and promote sustainable agricultural value chains that strengthen local and global food systems.
