Introduction

Sustainable management of the environment and natural resources is critical for achieving long-term development goals, combating climate change, and protecting ecosystems. However, assessing the effectiveness of environmental programs requires robust Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) systems capable of measuring ecological, economic, and social outcomes. This course provides participants with advanced knowledge and practical tools to design and implement M&E frameworks specifically tailored for environmental and natural resource management (ENRM) initiatives.

Participants will learn to apply M&E principles to complex, multi-sectoral environmental programs that involve diverse stakeholders from government agencies and communities to international development partners. The course emphasizes integrating scientific and socio-economic indicators to capture both short-term outputs and long-term impacts of conservation and resource management interventions.

Through hands-on training and real-world case studies, participants will explore techniques for environmental data collection, analysis, and visualization. They will gain skills in applying digital technologies, such as GIS, remote sensing, and mobile data collection tools, to enhance monitoring accuracy and decision-making processes.

Additionally, the course delves into evaluating climate adaptation and mitigation programs, ecosystem restoration projects, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable resource utilization. It helps participants develop the ability to measure progress toward national and global sustainability targets, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

Participants will also examine participatory approaches that engage communities, indigenous groups, and local organizations in M&E, ensuring that environmental management decisions are inclusive and equitable. Emphasis will be placed on integrating gender and social inclusion perspectives in evaluation practices.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to design comprehensive, evidence-based M&E systems that foster accountability, inform adaptive management, and strengthen policy decisions for sustainable environmental and natural resource outcomes.
