Introduction

Ensuring food security and improved nutrition remains a critical global development priority, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where hunger, malnutrition, and vulnerability are prevalent. Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) systems play a vital role in assessing the effectiveness, efficiency, and impact of food security and nutrition programmes, helping stakeholders to make evidence-based decisions that improve lives and livelihoods. The Monitoring and Evaluation for Food Security and Nutrition Course equips participants with the tools and approaches needed to track progress, measure results, and optimize interventions aimed at achieving nutrition security and sustainable food systems.

This course offers an in-depth exploration of M&E frameworks, indicators, and tools specific to the food and nutrition sector. Participants will gain practical skills in designing M&E plans, developing food and nutrition-related indicators (e.g., dietary diversity, food consumption scores, anthropometric measures), and applying both quantitative and qualitative methods to evaluate programme performance. The course also highlights the role of participatory approaches and community-based monitoring in ensuring that M&E processes are inclusive and context-specific.

Through real-world case studies, interactive exercises, and hands-on training, participants will learn to interpret and communicate data effectively to inform programming and policy decisions. Special focus will be given to emerging themes such as the integration of gender and climate resilience into M&E, the use of digital technologies for data collection, and the application of geospatial tools to map food insecurity hotspots.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design and manage robust M&E systems for food security and nutrition programmes, contribute to better targeting of interventions, and enhance accountability and learning among stakeholders. This course is ideal for M&E professionals, nutritionists, agricultural officers, development practitioners, and policymakers working to improve food and nutrition outcomes at local, national, and global levels.

Duration

10 days
