Introduction

As the global transition to clean and renewable energy accelerates, effective Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) systems have become critical to assess impact, optimize resources, and ensure sustainability of energy access programs. This course provides participants with comprehensive knowledge and practical tools to design, implement, and manage M&E frameworks tailored to renewable energy and energy access initiatives across diverse contexts.

Energy programs are often complex, involving multiple stakeholders, technologies, and policy dimensions. Participants will learn to track progress from project implementation to long-term outcomes, capturing both quantitative and qualitative results that reflect energy efficiency, affordability, and sustainability goals. The course emphasizes how M&E systems can inform evidence-based decision-making, support climate commitments, and enhance accountability.

Through interactive sessions, participants will explore techniques for developing performance indicators specific to the energy sector, including metrics for access, reliability, renewable generation, emissions reduction, and social inclusion. They will gain experience in applying logical frameworks, results chains, and theory of change models suited to energy projects.

The course also integrates the use of digital technologies, such as mobile data collection, smart metering, GIS mapping, and real-time dashboards, to strengthen data quality and enable timely reporting. Emphasis will be placed on using data visualization tools to communicate outcomes effectively to policymakers, funders, and the public.

Participants will examine case studies from successful energy programs worldwide, including rural electrification, solar energy deployment, and clean cooking initiatives. They will learn how to conduct impact evaluations that measure both environmental and socio-economic benefits of renewable energy interventions.

By the end of the training, participants will be equipped to design robust, adaptive, and sector-relevant M&E systems that ensure energy access and renewable energy programs deliver measurable results, contribute to sustainable development, and align with national and global climate action goals.
