Introduction

Agriculture and rural development are central to achieving food security, poverty reduction, and inclusive economic growth in many parts of the world. Effective Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) systems are essential to ensure that agricultural and rural development initiatives are impactful, efficient, and aligned with national and global development goals. The Monitoring and Evaluation for Agriculture and Rural Development Course is designed to equip professionals with the tools, knowledge, and frameworks needed to assess program performance, generate actionable insights, and enhance evidence-based decision-making in agriculture and rural sectors.

This course provides a comprehensive understanding of M&E principles tailored to the unique challenges and dynamics of agricultural and rural development programs. Participants will explore key concepts such as results-based management, theory of change, indicators for agriculture and rural livelihoods, and participatory M&E techniques. Real-life case studies and sector-specific tools will be used to demonstrate how M&E can be applied effectively across project cycles, from planning to impact evaluation.

Through a practical, hands-on approach, participants will gain skills in designing M&E frameworks, developing data collection tools, analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, and reporting outcomes in ways that inform policy and practice. Emphasis will be placed on integrating M&E with agricultural extension, food systems, climate-smart agriculture, gender equality, and rural infrastructure initiatives.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to implement robust M&E systems tailored to agriculture and rural development programs. This course is ideal for M&E officers, agricultural planners, rural development specialists, project managers, donor representatives, and anyone involved in planning, implementing, or evaluating agricultural and rural initiatives.

Duration

5 days

Course Objectives

By the end of this course the learners should be able to:

·       Provide participants with a solid foundation in Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) principles, tools, and methodologies specifically tailored to agriculture and rural development contexts.

·       Strengthen skills in designing results-based M&E frameworks, including developing logical frameworks, theories of change, and context-appropriate indicators.

·       Equip learners with the ability to collect, analyze, and interpret both quantitative and qualitative data relevant to agricultural and rural development programs.

·       Build participants’ capacity to apply participatory M&E approaches that engage rural communities and agricultural stakeholders effectively.

·       Enhance competence in using M&E findings to improve program planning, policy formulation, learning, and accountability within agricultural and rural initiatives.

·       Promote integration of cross-cutting themes such as gender, climate resilience, and food security into M&E systems for more inclusive and sustainable outcomes.

·       Enable participants to design and manage evaluations (baseline, midterm, endline, and impact) that provide actionable insights for rural development programs.

Who should Attend?

This course is ideal for
