Course Introduction

Mobile video has transformed field reporting by enabling journalists, communication professionals, public affairs teams, and independent content producers to research, record, edit, verify, and publish compelling stories with equipment that can fit into a pocket. This course develops the practical skills required to use smartphones effectively for professional video interviews and field reporting while maintaining strong editorial judgement, accuracy, ethical standards, and production quality.

The programme examines the complete mobile reporting workflow, from story identification and field preparation through interviewing, location assessment, smartphone camera operation, audio capture, visual composition, scripting, editing, verification, and publication. Participants learn how to work efficiently in fast-moving environments where access, time, lighting, connectivity, safety, and changing circumstances can significantly affect the quality and reliability of field-produced video.

Particular attention is given to video interviewing as a core reporting skill. Participants explore how to prepare effective questions, establish rapport, obtain informed participation, manage difficult interviews, capture usable answers, conduct interviews in challenging locations, and record supporting visuals. The course also addresses interviewer positioning, framing, eye-line, sound, background selection, continuity, follow-up questioning, and techniques for producing natural and credible interview material.

The course integrates mobile journalism principles with practical field-reporting methods, including observation, source development, fact-checking, contextual research, evidence gathering, live or near-live reporting, and responsible use of user-generated material. Participants learn how to distinguish verified information from assumptions, identify unreliable sources, preserve original evidence, and communicate uncertainty when facts are still developing.

AI-assisted tools are incorporated where they can improve efficiency without replacing editorial responsibility. Participants examine applications such as transcription, captioning, translation, summarisation, interview preparation, research assistance, script development, editing support, and content analysis. The programme emphasises human verification, source provenance, privacy, disclosure, accuracy, and careful review of AI-generated outputs before publication.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to plan and execute professional mobile video interviews and field assignments from start to finish. They will be equipped to gather reliable information, produce technically sound footage, interview sources confidently, construct concise visual narratives, respond to developing situations, verify material, and publish responsibly across digital platforms while protecting credibility and public trust.
