Introduction

The Microfinance Regulation, Supervision and Consumer Protection Training Course provides an in-depth understanding of the policy, legal, and regulatory frameworks governing microfinance institutions (MFIs). In an era of rapid digital transformation, emerging risks, and diverse delivery channels, sound regulation and effective supervision are vital to ensuring financial stability, client protection, and sustainable sector growth.

This course explores how regulatory frameworks influence the operations and performance of MFIs, savings groups, SACCOs, and digital financial service providers. Participants will gain a clear understanding of how prudential and non-prudential regulations, licensing regimes, capital requirements, and risk-based supervision impact institutional behavior and market development.

The training emphasizes the principles and standards of responsible finance, with a focus on protecting clients from over-indebtedness, unethical practices, and data privacy breaches. Participants will engage with global best practices, such as the Smart Campaign principles, CGAP guidelines, and AFI regulatory frameworks that promote transparency, fairness, and financial inclusion.

Through practical exercises and case studies, participants will explore supervisory approaches for both traditional and digital microfinance operations. They will learn to apply risk-based methodologies, analyze institutional performance, and identify early warning indicators to ensure compliance and sustainability.

The course also examines the emerging regulatory challenges posed by fintech innovations, mobile money, peer-to-peer lending, and alternative credit scoring models. Participants will be equipped to design responsive regulatory systems that promote innovation while mitigating systemic risks.

By the end of this course, participants will have the knowledge and tools to strengthen the regulatory and supervisory ecosystem for microfinance, enhance consumer protection, and support an inclusive, stable, and responsible financial sector.
