Course Introduction

Water quality plays a critical role in public health, environmental sustainability, and economic development. The Microbial and Chemical Contaminants in Water Systems Training Course provides participants with advanced knowledge and skills to identify, monitor, and mitigate contamination sources in water supply systems across rural, urban, and industrial settings.

The course explores the full spectrum of water contaminants from pathogenic microorganisms and viruses to heavy metals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and emerging pollutants like PFAS and microplastics. Participants will gain a deep understanding of contamination pathways, exposure risks, and the implications for human health and ecosystems.

Combining theory with practical application, this program emphasizes analytical methods, field monitoring techniques, and laboratory diagnostics used in water quality management. Learners will be trained in data interpretation, quality control, and reporting for regulatory and compliance purposes in line with WHO, EPA, and ISO standards.

Emerging issues such as antibiotic-resistant bacteria, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and industrial discharge pollution are also integrated into the curriculum. Participants will learn innovative control strategies, including advanced oxidation, biofiltration, and green technologies for contaminant removal.

The training promotes risk-based management and early detection strategies supported by digital water monitoring systems, GIS tools, and predictive modeling. It also highlights policy and governance frameworks essential for implementing preventive measures in both public and private water sectors.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design, manage, and evaluate contaminant control programs that protect water users, enhance compliance, and support sustainable water resource management under evolving environmental and public health challenges.
