Introduction
Climate change is not only an environmental and economic crisis but also a growing mental health challenge affecting individuals, communities, and institutions worldwide. This course provides an in-depth exploration of the psychological and psychosocial impacts of climate change, including stress, trauma, grief, and climate anxiety.
Participants will examine how climate-related events such as droughts, floods, heatwaves, and displacement affect mental health across different populations. The course emphasizes the interconnectedness of environmental change, social vulnerability, and psychological wellbeing in both low- and high-income contexts.
A strong focus is placed on climate anxiety, eco-distress, and solastalgia, particularly among youth, frontline communities, and environmental professionals. Participants will gain evidence-based insights into how these emerging mental health conditions manifest and how they can be addressed ethically and effectively.
The course integrates clinical, community-based, and public health perspectives to equip participants with practical strategies for prevention, early intervention, and psychosocial support. It highlights culturally sensitive and trauma-informed approaches tailored to climate-affected populations.
Participants will also explore the role of mental health systems, policies, and services in climate adaptation and resilience planning. The course examines how mental health considerations can be embedded into climate action, disaster preparedness, and sustainable development programs.
By the end of the course, participants will be prepared to design, implement, and advocate for mental health responses that address climate-related psychological distress. The training empowers professionals to support resilience, coping, and collective action in the face of climate change.
