Course Introduction
The Mental Health and Human Rights Training Course is designed to build professional capacity in understanding, promoting, and protecting the human rights of people with mental health conditions across policy, service delivery, and community settings. The course responds to persistent rights violations and the growing demand for rights-based mental health systems globally.
This course explores the close relationship between mental health and human rights, emphasizing dignity, autonomy, equality, and non-discrimination. Participants will gain a solid grounding in international human rights instruments and how they apply to mental health laws, policies, and practices in diverse social and institutional contexts.
Participants will examine how stigma, exclusion, coercive practices, and weak legal protections undermine mental health outcomes and social justice. The training highlights how rights-based approaches strengthen service quality, accountability, access to care, and the empowerment of individuals and communities.
The course integrates legal, public health, and social perspectives to address systemic challenges affecting mental health and human rights. It provides practical guidance on aligning mental health services with human rights standards while balancing public safety, ethics, and professional responsibilities.
Through case studies, policy analysis, and applied learning exercises, participants will develop skills to assess rights compliance, advocate for reform, and design inclusive mental health interventions. Emerging issues such as humanitarian crises, digital mental health, and climate-related distress are embedded throughout the training.
By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to champion human rights–based mental health systems that are lawful, ethical, and people-centered. The training empowers professionals to influence policy, practice, and institutional culture to achieve lasting improvements in mental health and social inclusion.
