Course Introduction

Mental health advocacy, policy, and law play a central role in shaping equitable, accessible, and rights-based mental health systems. This training course is designed to strengthen participant capacity to influence policy processes, advocate for systemic reform, and apply legal frameworks that protect the dignity and rights of people with mental health conditions across diverse contexts.

The course responds to growing recognition that mental health outcomes are strongly influenced by governance, legislation, and public policy decisions. Participants will explore how laws, policies, and advocacy strategies interact to determine access to services, funding priorities, accountability, and protection from discrimination and abuse.

Participants will gain a deep understanding of national and international mental health policy frameworks, human rights instruments, and legal standards. The training emphasizes translating global commitments into actionable national and local policies that respond to population needs and lived experiences.

Through practical case studies, advocacy simulations, and policy analysis exercises, learners will build skills to engage decision-makers, influence legislative reform, and mobilize stakeholders. Special attention is given to inclusive advocacy approaches that center service users, caregivers, and marginalized populations.

The course integrates emerging issues such as mental health law reform, strategic litigation, digital advocacy, and intersectional policy analysis. Participants will examine how social justice, gender, disability, and socio-economic factors shape mental health policy environments.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to design and implement effective advocacy strategies, contribute to policy development processes, and support legal frameworks that advance mental health equity, accountability, and social inclusion.
