Course Introduction

Effective media pitching increasingly depends on relevance, timing, editorial understanding, and the quality of the relationship between communicators and newsrooms. Generic press releases and mass-distributed pitches are less likely to earn attention when journalists operate under intense deadlines and receive large volumes of competing information. This course develops the practical capabilities required to create personalised media pitches that respond to genuine newsroom needs.

The programme examines how journalists, editors, producers, and specialist media teams identify stories, assess sources, prioritise competing opportunities, and make editorial decisions. Participants learn how to research individual journalists and publications, understand beats and reporting patterns, identify current editorial interests, and translate organisational information into credible story opportunities that are relevant to specific newsroom environments.

Participants will develop practical methods for personalising pitches without becoming intrusive or overly promotional. The course covers subject-line development, story angles, evidence selection, expert positioning, local and sector relevance, timing, exclusivity, news value, supporting materials, follow-up, and relationship management. Particular emphasis is placed on demonstrating genuine understanding of a journalist's work rather than simply inserting a journalist's name into a generic message.

The programme also explores newsroom engagement across newspapers, magazines, broadcast organisations, digital publications, specialist outlets, newsletters, podcasts, and emerging media platforms. Participants examine how editorial calendars, breaking news, publication cycles, deadlines, newsroom structures, resource constraints, and changing media consumption patterns affect pitch strategy and engagement decisions.

AI-assisted tools are incorporated into research, journalist discovery, pitch analysis, topic monitoring, personalisation, briefing preparation, and workflow management. Participants learn how natural language processing, semantic analysis, generative AI, structured journalist intelligence, and automated monitoring can improve efficiency while recognising risks such as hallucinated journalist interests, outdated profiles, fabricated references, excessive automation, privacy concerns, and inappropriate personalisation.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to research relevant journalists and newsrooms, identify compelling editorial opportunities, develop highly targeted pitches, engage media professionals appropriately, manage follow-up, and evaluate results. They will be equipped to replace volume-driven outreach with evidence-based, relationship-oriented media engagement that improves relevance, credibility, response quality, and long-term newsroom relationships.
