Course Introduction

Maritime Data Analytics and Port Intelligence Training Course provides a practical framework for transforming shipping, vessel, terminal, cargo, port-call, logistics, and operational data into actionable intelligence. The course is designed for professionals who need to understand how analytics can improve port efficiency, vessel turnaround, cargo flows, capacity utilization, service reliability, supply-chain connectivity, and strategic maritime decision-making. Participants explore the complete analytical lifecycle, from data acquisition and preparation through KPI development, performance analysis, visualization, forecasting, and operational recommendations.

Modern ports increasingly depend on interconnected digital systems that exchange information among ships, port authorities, terminals, agents, customs, regulators, logistics providers, and other stakeholders. The International Maritime Organization's maritime digitalization work emphasizes interoperability, standardized information exchange, data sharing, and effective data governance, while the IMO Compendium provides a reference model for harmonizing maritime information and supporting Maritime Single Windows and port-call optimization. This course therefore examines how professionals can structure and analyze data across fragmented maritime environments while maintaining consistency, quality, transparency, and operational relevance.

A major focus is port performance intelligence, including vessel turnaround time, waiting time, berth utilization, cargo-handling productivity, yard performance, gate activity, vessel arrivals and departures, congestion, service reliability, and capacity utilization. The World Bank's Container Port Performance Index demonstrates how vessel time in port can be used as a data-driven measure of port efficiency and as a diagnostic tool for identifying performance gaps and improvement opportunities. Participants learn how to translate similar operational measurements into dashboards, comparative analyses, trend reports, root-cause investigations, and management-level performance indicators.

The course also addresses maritime data integration and digital port ecosystems. Participants examine vessel movement data, AIS information, schedules, berth events, terminal operating systems, cargo records, customs and clearance information, port-call messages, weather and oceanographic data, equipment data, financial information, and supply-chain datasets. Current IMO initiatives emphasize standardized maritime data exchange and Maritime Single Windows, which became mandatory for IMO Member States from 1 January 2024. This provides an important foundation for understanding how better data interoperability can support more efficient port procedures and stronger operational intelligence.

Maritime analytics also requires the ability to anticipate congestion, delays, demand changes, vessel arrivals, berth requirements, equipment constraints, and disruptions. The course introduces descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and scenario-based analytics for port and maritime operations. Participants learn how to investigate patterns in vessel calls, cargo volumes, turnaround performance, berth occupancy, equipment productivity, shipping connectivity, and operational disruptions, while distinguishing between correlation, operational drivers, and measurable performance impacts. UN Trade and Development provides maritime transport data and indicators covering areas such as port connectivity and international freight transport, reinforcing the importance of data-driven analysis across global maritime networks.

The final component integrates maritime datasets into a practical Port Intelligence project. Participants develop an analytical framework covering operational KPIs, data quality, port performance, vessel movements, congestion, capacity, cargo activity, service reliability, and executive reporting. They learn how to communicate analytical findings to port executives, terminal managers, shipping companies, regulators, logistics providers, and other stakeholders, with emphasis on actionable recommendations rather than isolated statistics. By the end of the course, participants can apply a structured approach to maritime data analytics and build intelligence capabilities that support operational efficiency, resilience, digital transformation, and evidence-based port management.
