Course Introduction

Marine ecosystems are among the most vital and yet most threatened natural systems on Earth, supporting biodiversity, regulating climate, and sustaining millions of livelihoods globally. This course provides an in-depth understanding of marine ecosystem protection, conservation strategies, and sustainable ocean resource management.

Oceans face increasing pressure from pollution, overfishing, coastal development, climate change, and habitat destruction. These stressors are rapidly degrading coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds, and deep-sea ecosystems, making marine protection an urgent global priority requiring coordinated scientific and policy action.

This course explores the ecological structure and functioning of marine ecosystems while emphasizing conservation approaches such as marine protected areas, ecosystem-based management, and biodiversity restoration techniques that help sustain ocean health.

Participants will examine the impacts of climate change on marine systems, including ocean acidification, rising sea temperatures, and coral bleaching events. The course integrates scientific knowledge with practical conservation planning tools to address these challenges effectively.

Special focus is placed on marine pollution control, including plastic waste, oil spills, chemical contamination, and coastal runoff. Learners will gain insights into mitigation strategies and international frameworks governing marine environmental protection.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the skills and knowledge required to design, implement, and evaluate marine ecosystem protection programs that support sustainable ocean governance and global biodiversity conservation goals.
