Course Introduction
Machine learning projects require managers to coordinate business objectives, data, technology, people, governance, and operational change without necessarily needing to develop algorithms or write production code. This course provides non-technical managers with a practical understanding of the machine learning project lifecycle, enabling them to make informed decisions, manage delivery expectations, communicate effectively with technical specialists, and maintain alignment between ML initiatives and organizational priorities.
Unlike conventional software projects, machine learning initiatives involve experimentation, uncertain outcomes, data dependencies, model performance considerations, and iterative development. Managers must understand concepts such as training data, features, models, validation, accuracy, bias, model drift, and deployment well enough to manage scope, schedule, resources, risks, quality, and stakeholder expectations. The course explains these concepts in accessible business language without requiring programming or advanced mathematics.
Participants will learn how to translate business problems into suitable machine learning opportunities, evaluate use cases, develop business cases, establish realistic project plans, and determine whether a proposed ML initiative is sufficiently prepared to proceed. The course emphasizes practical project management disciplines including milestones, work packages, dependencies, resource planning, risk registers, decision points, vendor management, quality gates, and executive reporting.
Machine learning projects can encounter challenges involving insufficient data, unclear objectives, unrealistic performance expectations, changing requirements, technical dependencies, privacy concerns, bias, cybersecurity, integration difficulties, and weak user adoption. This course helps non-technical managers recognize these issues early and ask the right questions of technical teams without attempting to replace specialist expertise. Participants will learn how to distinguish manageable project risks from issues that require escalation to data science, engineering, security, legal, or governance specialists.
The course also addresses the people and business dimensions of machine learning adoption. Participants will explore stakeholder management, communication between technical and business teams, change impact assessment, user acceptance, process redesign, training, human oversight, operational readiness, and benefits realization. The focus is on helping managers ensure that technically successful models translate into practical business outcomes and sustainable operational capabilities.
The course introduces emerging developments such as generative AI, AI agents, automated machine learning, MLOps, predictive analytics, foundation models, AI copilots, and intelligent automation from a management perspective. Participants will learn how these technologies affect project scope, delivery models, budgets, risks, governance, staffing, vendor selection, and operational requirements, enabling them to lead increasingly sophisticated ML initiatives with confidence.
