Course Introduction

The Logistic Regression and Classification Analysis Training Course provides participants with advanced practical skills for analyzing binary and categorical outcomes using logistic regression and complementary classification techniques. Logistic regression is widely used when the outcome of interest represents categories such as success or failure, presence or absence, purchase or non-purchase, or other discrete outcomes. The course connects statistical theory with practical modeling, interpretation, validation, and research applications.

Participants develop a strong understanding of the mathematical and statistical foundations of logistic regression, including probabilities, odds, log-odds, the logistic function, maximum likelihood estimation, coefficients, likelihood-based inference, and predicted probabilities. Particular attention is given to interpreting odds ratios correctly and translating model coefficients into meaningful findings for research, business, public health, social science, and operational applications.

The programme provides extensive coverage of model development, including predictor selection, categorical variables, interactions, nonlinear effects, transformations, confounding, and model specification. Participants learn how to construct models appropriate for binary outcomes while avoiding common errors such as inappropriate linear regression for categorical outcomes, overfitting, data leakage, unstable predictors, and unsupported variable selection. Practical exercises demonstrate how modeling choices influence interpretation and classification performance.

A major focus is placed on evaluating logistic regression and classification models. Participants learn to assess discrimination, calibration, classification thresholds, confusion matrices, sensitivity, specificity, precision, recall, predictive values, ROC curves, AUC, calibration measures, and cross-validation. The course emphasizes that classification performance depends on the decision threshold, outcome prevalence, validation strategy, and practical context rather than relying on a single performance metric.

The training also introduces advanced classification approaches and modern computational methods. Participants explore multinomial and ordinal logistic regression, penalized logistic regression, decision trees, ensemble methods, support vector machines, and other classification techniques. Machine-learning approaches are compared with statistical logistic regression in terms of prediction, interpretability, validation, computational requirements, and research reporting. Emerging AI-assisted analytical workflows are discussed with emphasis on transparency and appropriate human oversight.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to develop complete classification workflows from data preparation and exploratory analysis through model estimation, diagnostics, validation, interpretation, and reporting. They will be equipped to select suitable classification methods, evaluate predictive performance, investigate model limitations, interpret probability-based results, and communicate findings responsibly. The course provides a practical foundation for applying logistic regression and classification analysis to real-world research and analytical problems.
