Course Introduction

Local Governance and Community Accountability is a foundational course designed to strengthen transparency, participation, and responsiveness in local governance systems. It equips participants with practical tools to enhance citizen engagement and improve service delivery at the community level.

The course explores the structure and functions of local government institutions, including decision-making processes, resource allocation, and public service management. Participants will gain insights into how governance systems can be made more inclusive, efficient, and accountable to citizens.

A strong focus is placed on community accountability mechanisms such as social audits, public hearings, citizen scorecards, and feedback systems. These tools empower communities to actively monitor and influence governance outcomes.

Participants will also examine transparency and anti-corruption strategies within local governance systems. The course highlights how open data, participatory budgeting, and civic oversight contribute to reducing inefficiencies and misuse of public resources.
