Introduction

Records management is a cornerstone of organizational accountability, transparency, and compliance. In an increasingly regulated environment, institutions must ensure their records are managed in line with legal and regulatory requirements to avoid penalties, reputational damage, and operational risks.

This course provides a detailed understanding of the legal and regulatory frameworks governing records management, with a focus on international standards, data protection regulations, and sector-specific requirements. It prepares participants to navigate the complexities of compliance in both traditional and digital recordkeeping environments.

Through case studies and real-world examples, participants will explore the consequences of non-compliance, ranging from litigation risks to breaches of data privacy. They will also learn how to design compliance strategies that integrate legal requirements into everyday records management practices.

The program highlights critical issues such as data privacy, information security, electronic discovery (e-discovery), and the admissibility of records in legal proceedings. It emphasizes how organizations can align their recordkeeping systems with evolving laws, ensuring legal defensibility and institutional resilience.

Participants will gain hands-on skills to interpret legislation, apply standards such as ISO 15489, and implement frameworks that foster accountability. They will also explore emerging legal challenges in cloud-based systems, cross-border data management, and the governance of digital assets.

By the end of this training, participants will be empowered to safeguard their organizations from compliance risks, strengthen governance structures, and ensure records remain credible, accessible, and legally defensible.
