Course Introduction

Labor rights and decent work are critical components of sustainable development and inclusive economic growth. In many economies, workers continue to face challenges such as unsafe working conditions, low wages, lack of social protection, and limited access to legal recourse. These realities often hinder progress toward achieving global labor standards and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Labor Rights and Decent Work in Developing Economies Course equips participants with the knowledge, skills, and practical strategies necessary to promote fair labor practices, strengthen institutional frameworks, and advocate for workers’ rights. It draws on international labor standards, including conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO), and links them to the local realities of developing economies.

This course explores the complexities of labor markets, informal employment, child labor, gender-based discrimination, and forced labor. It also delves into practical approaches to workplace health and safety, collective bargaining, and the promotion of decent employment opportunities that contribute to poverty reduction.

Participants will engage with case studies, policy debates, and interactive exercises that highlight both challenges and innovative solutions. Special emphasis is given to the roles of governments, private sector actors, civil society, and trade unions in advancing decent work and protecting vulnerable workers.

Emerging issues such as the impact of globalization, digitalization, climate change, and the gig economy on labor rights will also be examined. These discussions will prepare participants to anticipate and respond to evolving labor market dynamics while ensuring that rights and protections remain central.

Ultimately, this course aims to empower professionals to advocate for inclusive labor systems that uphold dignity, equity, and sustainability while fostering economic and social justice in developing contexts.
