Course Introduction

Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) professionals increasingly rely on digital data collection platforms to improve the quality, speed, accuracy, and efficiency of field data management. KoboToolbox, Open Data Kit (ODK), and SurveyCTO have emerged as leading tools for designing digital surveys, collecting field data, conducting assessments, and supporting evidence-based decision-making. This course provides participants with practical skills to design, deploy, manage, and analyze digital data collection systems using these powerful platforms in development, humanitarian, government, and private sector contexts.

Traditional paper-based data collection methods often face challenges related to data quality, delayed reporting, transcription errors, and high operational costs. Digital data collection technologies address these limitations by enabling real-time data capture, automated validation, geospatial tracking, multimedia collection, and rapid reporting. Through hands-on exercises and practical demonstrations, participants will learn how to transform monitoring and evaluation processes through effective use of KoboToolbox, ODK, and SurveyCTO.

Modern M&E systems require robust data collection frameworks capable of supporting complex surveys, impact evaluations, needs assessments, beneficiary registration, project monitoring, and compliance reporting. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of form design principles, skip logic, validation rules, calculations, repeat groups, geolocation functions, and mobile deployment strategies that improve data accuracy and operational efficiency across projects and programs.

The course explores the full digital data lifecycle, from survey design and field deployment to data management, analysis, visualization, and reporting. Participants will learn best practices for ensuring data quality, maintaining data security, managing enumerator teams, and implementing quality assurance procedures that support reliable evidence generation. The training emphasizes practical approaches applicable across diverse sectors including health, education, agriculture, governance, humanitarian response, and social development.

Emerging trends such as offline data collection, cloud-based data management, GIS integration, dashboard development, real-time monitoring, artificial intelligence-assisted analytics, and mobile monitoring systems are integrated throughout the course. Participants will explore how digital innovations are reshaping monitoring and evaluation practices and enabling organizations to generate timely insights for adaptive management and improved program performance.

By the end of the course, participants will possess the technical competencies required to independently design digital questionnaires, manage field data collection operations, monitor data quality, analyze collected information, and generate actionable reports. The skills acquired will enable organizations to strengthen evidence-based decision-making, improve accountability, enhance program effectiveness, and achieve better development outcomes through modern M&E technologies.
