Course Introduction

Investment valuation and pricing controls are fundamental to reliable financial reporting, portfolio management, risk measurement, regulatory compliance, and investor protection. This course provides an audit-focused framework for evaluating how investment values are sourced, calculated, validated, approved, recorded, reconciled, and reported across portfolios containing securities, funds, derivatives, structured products, and other financial instruments.

The course examines the complete investment valuation lifecycle, beginning with instrument identification and market data sourcing and continuing through pricing methodologies, valuation models, independent price verification, fair value measurement, accounting, disclosures, and exception management. Participants will learn how auditors can assess whether valuation processes are appropriately designed, consistently applied, independently reviewed, and supported by reliable evidence.

Particular attention is given to pricing controls for quoted and unquoted investments, thinly traded securities, complex instruments, private investments, structured products, and assets requiring significant management judgment. Participants will explore observable market inputs, valuation hierarchies, pricing sources, broker quotes, model-based valuations, liquidity adjustments, credit spreads, yield curves, and other inputs that can materially affect reported investment values.

The course also addresses governance and organizational controls surrounding investment valuation, including segregation of duties, valuation committees, pricing policies, approved pricing sources, exception thresholds, independent verification, escalation procedures, model governance, and oversight responsibilities. Participants will learn how to identify control gaps that may result in inaccurate portfolio valuations, inappropriate pricing adjustments, delayed corrections, or financial reporting misstatements.

Modern investment environments increasingly depend on automated pricing feeds, portfolio management platforms, data vendors, cloud infrastructure, algorithmic valuation processes, artificial intelligence, and integrated accounting systems. The course therefore incorporates technology risks, data quality, cybersecurity, system interfaces, automated controls, data lineage, model risk, and continuous valuation monitoring into the audit approach.

Through practical audit scenarios and integrated case studies, participants will develop skills for testing investment pricing populations, investigating valuation exceptions, evaluating evidence, challenging management assumptions, documenting audit conclusions, and reporting control deficiencies. The course is designed to strengthen professional skepticism and provide a structured methodology for auditing investment valuation and pricing controls in complex financial environments.
