Course Introduction

Investment mandates establish the boundaries within which portfolio managers and investment teams are authorized to make investment decisions, allocate assets, manage risk, and execute transactions. This course provides a practical audit framework for evaluating whether investment portfolios remain aligned with approved mandates, investment policies, regulatory requirements, client restrictions, risk limits, and governance expectations throughout the investment lifecycle.

The course examines how auditors can translate investment mandates into clear and testable compliance criteria covering asset classes, concentration limits, geographic exposure, credit quality, duration, liquidity, leverage, derivatives, currencies, prohibited investments, counterparty exposures, and other portfolio restrictions. Participants will learn how to assess whether mandate requirements are appropriately documented, understood, implemented, monitored, and independently challenged.

Portfolio compliance auditing requires more than reviewing periodic reports. Effective assurance involves testing investment transactions, portfolio holdings, valuations, classifications, exposure calculations, breaches, exceptions, waivers, and remediation activities against approved requirements. Participants will develop techniques for identifying unauthorized investments, limit breaches, incorrect classifications, stale compliance data, control overrides, and weaknesses in portfolio monitoring.

The course also addresses the interaction between investment mandates, portfolio construction, investment management systems, order management platforms, custodial records, valuation systems, compliance engines, and financial reporting. Participants will examine how data quality, system configuration, reference data, automated rules, interfaces, access controls, and manual overrides can influence the accuracy and reliability of portfolio compliance monitoring.

Advanced topics include mandate interpretation, look-through analysis, derivatives exposure, embedded leverage, ESG or responsible-investment restrictions, liquidity requirements, affiliated investments, related-party restrictions, benchmark constraints, client-specific rules, regulatory developments, and rapidly changing portfolio conditions. Participants will also examine how auditors can use analytics to test large investment populations and identify exceptions requiring investigation.

Through practical exercises and an integrated portfolio compliance audit case study, participants will learn how to plan risk-based engagements, define audit criteria, obtain reliable evidence, perform compliance testing, investigate breaches, evaluate management responses, and communicate findings. The course is designed to strengthen investment governance, portfolio oversight, compliance assurance, and audit effectiveness.
