Course Introduction

International Investment Law and Bilateral Investment Treaties Course is designed to equip professionals with advanced legal, economic, and policy expertise in the governance of foreign investment across international jurisdictions. It provides a strong foundation in investor-state relations, treaty interpretation, and dispute resolution frameworks governing global investment flows.

The course explores the structure and function of bilateral investment treaties (BITs), multilateral agreements, and international investment protection standards. Participants will gain a deep understanding of how states and investors interact under international law, including protections such as fair and equitable treatment, expropriation standards, and national treatment principles.

It also emphasizes investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) mechanisms, arbitration procedures, and enforcement of arbitral awards. Learners will develop practical skills in analyzing investment disputes, understanding jurisdictional challenges, and evaluating legal claims arising from cross-border investment conflicts.

Special focus is given to treaty negotiation, drafting techniques, and policy considerations in international investment agreements. The course integrates comparative analysis of global investment regimes and examines how states balance investor protection with sovereign regulatory authority.

Participants will also examine emerging issues such as sustainable investment, ESG integration in investment treaties, and reform of ISDS systems. The program strengthens analytical and negotiation skills required to manage complex international investment relationships effectively.

The training concludes by addressing evolving trends such as investment treaty reform, climate change considerations in investment law, and the rise of new-generation BITs. It prepares professionals to operate confidently in the dynamic global investment law environment.
