Course Introduction
The Integrating Mental Health into Primary Healthcare Training Course is designed to strengthen the capacity of health systems and frontline providers to deliver accessible, holistic, and people-centered mental health services within primary healthcare settings. The course responds to the growing burden of mental health conditions and the need to close treatment gaps through integrated care models.
This training emphasizes the critical role of primary healthcare as the first point of contact for individuals experiencing mental health challenges. Participants will explore how integration improves early identification, continuity of care, and equitable access to mental health services, particularly in underserved and resource-limited communities.
Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of policy, clinical, and system-level approaches required to embed mental health into routine primary healthcare services. The course highlights collaborative care models that link mental health with maternal health, chronic disease management, and community health programs.
The course integrates global best practices, WHO guidelines, and national health policies to support effective service delivery and system strengthening. Emphasis is placed on task-sharing, workforce capacity development, and referral mechanisms that enhance quality, efficiency, and sustainability of integrated care.
Through applied case studies, simulations, and planning exercises, participants will develop practical skills in screening, basic psychosocial interventions, supervision, and service coordination. Emerging issues such as digital health, humanitarian contexts, and climate-related mental distress are addressed throughout the course.
By the end of the training, participants will be equipped to design, implement, and scale integrated mental health services within primary healthcare systems. The course empowers professionals to strengthen health system resilience, improve patient outcomes, and advance universal health coverage through integrated mental health care.
