Introduction

Integrating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) into Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) processes has become essential for enhancing accuracy, transparency, and decision-making in development programs. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of how GIS technologies can be leveraged to collect, analyze, and visualize spatial data for effective real-time monitoring and impact assessment. Participants will learn to use GIS tools to improve the precision of project tracking, resource allocation, and evidence-based reporting.

Monitoring and Evaluation practitioners are often challenged with tracking geographically dispersed projects and beneficiaries. GIS offers a robust framework to bridge this gap by visualizing performance indicators on interactive maps, enabling better spatial understanding of project dynamics and outcomes. Through this training, participants will master techniques to integrate spatial data into traditional M&E systems to achieve more holistic, context-based insights.

The course combines theory and practical exercises using leading GIS platforms such as QGIS and ArcGIS, along with mobile data collection tools like KoboToolbox, ODK, and SurveyCTO. Participants will learn to synchronize real-time field data with centralized dashboards for rapid visualization and decision-making support.

Emphasis will be placed on designing spatial indicators, geo-referencing data, and conducting geospatial analysis for M&E reports. Participants will explore how spatial mapping enhances program accountability, transparency, and responsiveness, particularly in multi-sectoral and geographically diverse projects.

Furthermore, the course introduces emerging innovations in GIS, including the use of drones, satellite imagery, and artificial intelligence (AI)-powered analytics for monitoring environmental, social, and economic outcomes. It prepares participants to harness cutting-edge technologies to deliver more efficient and responsive M&E systems.

By the end of the program, participants will be equipped to build integrated, data-rich GIS-based M&E systems capable of providing real-time insights, improving decision-making, and fostering adaptive management in diverse development and humanitarian contexts.
