Course Introduction

Integrated water resources management (IWRM) is a holistic approach that promotes the coordinated development and management of water, land, and related resources. This course provides participants with practical and theoretical knowledge needed to implement IWRM strategies in rural and agricultural contexts.

Rural areas often face water scarcity, competing water demands, and limited infrastructure, making integrated planning essential for sustainable development. This training equips participants with tools to manage water resources efficiently while ensuring equitable access for communities and ecosystems.

The course explores hydrological systems, watershed dynamics, irrigation planning, groundwater management, and water governance frameworks that support sustainable rural water development and long-term resilience.

Participants will also examine community participation models, institutional coordination mechanisms, and policy frameworks that ensure inclusive and effective water resource management in rural settings.

Special attention is given to climate variability, drought management, and flood risk reduction strategies that are increasingly affecting rural water availability and agricultural productivity.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to design and implement integrated water resource management strategies that improve rural livelihoods, enhance water security, and support sustainable development.
