Course Introduction

Integrated land use planning and natural resource management are essential for achieving sustainable development, environmental conservation, and economic growth. This course provides a comprehensive framework for understanding how land, water, forests, and other natural resources can be managed holistically to balance competing demands and ensure long-term sustainability.

As populations grow and development pressures intensify, land resources are increasingly under strain from urbanization, agriculture, infrastructure expansion, and climate change. This training equips participants with the skills to design and implement integrated land use plans that optimize resource use while minimizing environmental degradation and social conflict.

The course explores interdisciplinary approaches that combine environmental science, policy analysis, spatial planning, and stakeholder engagement. Participants will gain insights into how to harmonize land use decisions across sectors, ensuring that development initiatives align with ecological sustainability and community needs.

Participants will also examine governance frameworks, legal systems, and institutional arrangements that support effective land use planning and resource management. The program emphasizes participatory planning processes that involve communities, government agencies, and private sector stakeholders in decision-making.

Emerging topics such as climate-smart land use planning, ecosystem-based management, digital mapping technologies, and sustainable urban-rural linkages are integrated into the curriculum. Participants will learn how to use tools such as GIS, remote sensing, and data analytics to support evidence-based planning.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with practical skills to develop integrated land use plans, manage natural resources sustainably, and address complex environmental and development challenges. The training aims to strengthen capacity for informed decision-making and sustainable resource governance.
