Course Introduction

This course provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary understanding of integrated groundwater resource management with a strong focus on borehole sustainability. It is designed to equip professionals with the technical, environmental, and institutional knowledge required to manage groundwater systems efficiently while ensuring long-term resource protection and sustainable utilization.

Participants will explore advanced groundwater assessment techniques, aquifer characterization, recharge dynamics, and sustainable extraction practices. The course emphasizes the importance of balancing water demand with aquifer capacity to prevent over-extraction, contamination, and long-term depletion of groundwater resources.

A key focus is placed on borehole sustainability, including design optimization, operational efficiency, maintenance strategies, and rehabilitation of aging water wells. Participants will learn how to extend borehole lifespan through proper management practices and modern monitoring techniques.

The training also integrates policy, governance, and institutional frameworks that guide groundwater management at local, national, and regional levels. It highlights the role of regulatory systems, water rights, and community participation in ensuring equitable and sustainable groundwater use.

Modern technologies such as GIS, remote sensing, smart monitoring systems, and groundwater modeling tools are incorporated into the course. These tools enhance decision-making, improve resource mapping accuracy, and support real-time groundwater management strategies.

By the end of the course, participants will be capable of designing and implementing integrated groundwater management systems that ensure sustainability, resilience, and efficient use of borehole water resources in diverse environmental contexts.
