Course Introduction

Disasters are increasing in frequency and intensity due to climate change, urbanization, environmental degradation, and complex socio-political dynamics. This course provides a comprehensive framework for understanding disaster risks and building integrated preparedness systems that enhance resilience across communities and institutions.

Traditional disaster response approaches often focus on reactive measures rather than proactive preparedness. This course shifts the focus toward anticipatory planning, risk reduction, and resilience building, ensuring that systems are better equipped to withstand, adapt to, and recover from shocks and stresses.

Participants will explore integrated disaster management frameworks that combine early warning systems, risk assessment, emergency planning, and recovery strategies. The course emphasizes coordination between government agencies, humanitarian actors, and local communities for effective disaster preparedness.

A strong focus is placed on resilience building at multiple levels, including household, community, institutional, and national systems. Participants will learn how to design interventions that strengthen adaptive capacity and reduce vulnerability to both sudden-onset and slow-onset disasters.

The course also addresses emerging challenges such as climate-induced disasters, pandemics, urban flooding, technological hazards, and displacement crises. Participants will gain practical tools to integrate these risks into preparedness and resilience planning frameworks.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design and implement integrated disaster preparedness and resilience strategies that reduce risk, enhance response capacity, and support long-term recovery and sustainable development.
