Course Introduction

The Information Threat Triage and Communication Response Training Course equips communication professionals with the practical capabilities required to identify, assess, prioritise, and respond to information threats before they develop into significant organisational, reputational, or stakeholder crises. In a fast-moving digital environment, communication teams must process large volumes of information while determining which signals require immediate action, which require further investigation, and which can be monitored without intervention.

Information threats can emerge through misinformation, disinformation, manipulated media, leaked material, false allegations, impersonation, hostile narratives, fabricated documents, coordinated online activity, or rapidly spreading rumours. The challenge for communication teams is rarely a simple question of whether content is positive or negative. Effective triage requires assessment of credibility, reach, velocity, intent, audience exposure, potential harm, source reliability, and escalation potential so that limited response resources are directed towards the issues that matter most.

This course introduces structured information threat triage methodologies that enable teams to establish a reliable operating picture during uncertain and rapidly changing situations. Participants examine source verification, information classification, narrative analysis, social listening, media monitoring, anomaly detection, natural language processing, sentiment analysis, entity recognition, network analysis, and AI-assisted monitoring. These capabilities are integrated into practical workflows for detecting significant signals, validating evidence, assigning risk levels, and determining appropriate communication actions.

A core emphasis of the programme is disciplined decision-making under pressure. Participants learn how to distinguish confirmed facts from allegations, assumptions, speculation, incomplete information, and manipulated content. They explore confidence ratings, evidence thresholds, escalation criteria, decision logs, and structured assessment frameworks that help communication teams avoid both underreaction and overreaction. Particular attention is given to the risks of allowing urgency to override verification or allowing automated systems to make consequential judgements without appropriate human review.

The programme also addresses emerging information threats created by generative AI, synthetic media, deepfakes, voice cloning, AI-generated rumours, automated influence activity, bot amplification, fabricated citations, artificial engagement, search manipulation, and agentic AI systems. Participants examine how these developments can increase the volume, speed, complexity, and apparent credibility of information threats while also considering how AI can support detection, classification, monitoring, scenario assessment, and response preparation.

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to operate practical information threat triage processes, prioritise incidents according to evidence and potential impact, establish appropriate escalation routes, and develop proportionate communication responses. They will also be equipped to coordinate effectively with crisis communication, public relations, digital, media, legal, security, technology, risk, and executive functions, creating a more resilient approach to information threats and strengthening organisational trust.

  • Design proportionate communication responses that address verified risks without unnecessarily amplifying unverified or low-impact information.

  • Manage uncertainty, conflicting evidence, stakeholder pressure, and rapidly changing information while maintaining disciplined communication standards.

  • Build continuous triage, measurement, simulation, and improvement processes that strengthen organisational preparedness and information resilience.

Comprehensive Course Outline

Module 1: Foundations of Information Threat Triage

  • Understanding information threats, information integrity, misinformation, disinformation, manipulation, rumours, hostile narratives, and digital deception.

  • Examining why communication teams need structured triage systems to manage high-volume, high-velocity information environments.

  • Distinguishing routine communication issues, legitimate criticism, emerging risks, serious incidents, and critical information threats.

  • Establishing core principles of proportionality, evidence quality, urgency, accountability, and human judgement in information response.

Module 2: Threat Detection, Monitoring and Early Warning

  • Building monitoring systems across news, social media, search, forums, review platforms, messaging environments, and relevant digital communities.

  • Identifying changes in information volume, sentiment, narrative themes, engagement, source behaviour, and unusual activity patterns.

  • Applying AI-assisted monitoring, automated alerts, keyword tracking, entity monitoring, and anomaly detection to identify potential threats.

  • Developing early-warning indicators that connect information activity with reputational, operational, stakeholder, executive, or public consequences.

Module 3: Rapid Verification and Evidence Assessment

  • Applying structured techniques for verifying claims, sources, images, video, audio, documents, screenshots, quotations, and attributed statements.

  • Assessing provenance, metadata, publication history, corroboration, source credibility, contextual evidence, and contradictory information.

  • Establishing confidence levels that clearly distinguish verified facts, credible indications, assumptions, allegations, and unresolved questions.

  • Preserving evidence and documenting verification decisions so that subsequent communication actions remain traceable and accountable.

Module 4: Threat Classification and Risk Prioritisation

  • Developing triage categories based on credibility, severity, reach, velocity, audience exposure, intent, and potential organisational consequences.

  • Creating risk matrices that help communication teams prioritise limited resources during periods of information overload or crisis.

  • Assessing whether information is likely to remain isolated, escalate rapidly, cross into mainstream media, or affect critical stakeholders.

  • Establishing practical criteria for monitoring, investigating, escalating, correcting, rebutting, or activating formal incident response.

Module 5: Narrative Intelligence and Information Environment Analysis

  • Analysing themes, claims, frames, actors, audiences, channels, communities, and relationships surrounding emerging information threats.

  • Applying natural language processing, semantic analysis, topic modelling, clustering, classification, and entity recognition to complex information environments.

  • Using network analysis to identify amplification pathways, influential nodes, unusual clusters, coordinated activity, and cross-platform narrative movement.

  • Translating analytical findings into concise intelligence assessments that support timely communication and leadership decisions.

Module 6: AI-Enabled Information Threats and Synthetic Content
