Course Introduction

Influencer partnerships can provide communication teams with significant reach, credibility and audience access, but they can also expose organisations to reputational, compliance and operational risks. A creator's public history, content behaviour, affiliations, audience quality and response to controversial issues can materially affect the reputation of an organisation that chooses to work with them.

This course equips public relations and communication professionals with practical frameworks for conducting structured influencer due diligence before, during and after a partnership. Participants learn how to investigate publicly available information, evaluate reputational indicators, verify relevant claims and distinguish meaningful warning signs from isolated incidents or irrelevant online activity.

The programme covers the complete reputation-screening process, including influencer identification, background research, content review, audience assessment, network analysis, risk classification, documentation, escalation and decision-making. It emphasises proportionality, evidence quality, contextual judgement and fair treatment rather than indiscriminate surveillance or superficial screening based on popularity or controversy alone.

Participants will explore how AI and analytics can support large-scale screening and monitoring. Natural language processing, sentiment analysis, topic modelling, entity recognition, classification, anomaly detection and network analysis can help communication teams identify patterns and prioritise reviews. The course also emphasises human verification, source provenance, uncertainty management and the limitations of automated systems.

The course addresses sensitive risks including offensive or discriminatory content, misinformation, undisclosed commercial relationships, fabricated engagement, conflicts of interest, inappropriate affiliations, privacy concerns, synthetic media, deepfakes and rapidly emerging controversies. Participants learn how to establish clear governance boundaries and avoid unfair, intrusive or poorly evidenced reputation assessments.

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to design and operate a defensible influencer due-diligence process that supports informed partnership decisions. They will be better prepared to assess reputational exposure, document evidence, communicate findings to decision-makers, manage ongoing monitoring and respond appropriately when new information changes the risk profile of an influencer relationship.

Comprehensive Course Outline

Module 1: Foundations of Influencer Due Diligence

  • Understanding why influencer screening has become an essential component of modern reputation, partnership and communication risk management.

  • Defining due diligence, reputation screening, brand-safety assessment, background research and ongoing influencer risk monitoring.

  • Establishing the difference between legitimate reputational risk indicators, subjective judgements, rumours, allegations and irrelevant personal information.

  • Developing principles of proportionality, evidence quality, fairness, confidentiality, accountability and responsible decision-making throughout the screening process.

Module 2: Influencer Background Research and Verification

  • Building systematic research processes covering professional history, public activity, partnerships, affiliations, content behaviour and relevant reputation indicators.

  • Identifying reliable primary and secondary sources while assessing source credibility, publication context, recency and potential bias.

  • Applying verification techniques to distinguish confirmed information from rumours, recycled claims, manipulated material and unsupported online narratives.

  • Creating documented research trails that allow findings to be reviewed, challenged and updated as new evidence becomes available.

Module 3: Content and Reputation Screening

  • Reviewing historical and current influencer content to identify recurring themes, behavioural patterns, controversial narratives and potential organisational conflicts.

  • Assessing content in context by considering timing, audience, platform, intent, subsequent corrections, evolving public positions and surrounding circumstances.

  • Developing screening taxonomies covering misinformation, hate or discriminatory content, harassment, inappropriate conduct, misleading claims and other relevant risks.

  • Distinguishing isolated historical incidents from sustained patterns that may materially affect partnership suitability and organisational reputation.

Module 4: Audience, Engagement and Network Risk

  • Evaluating audience quality, engagement patterns and community characteristics to identify potential risks beyond headline follower counts.

  • Identifying signs of artificial engagement, purchased audiences, coordinated activity, bot-like behaviour, suspicious growth and manipulated interaction patterns.

  • Using network analysis and entity recognition to understand relationships among influencers, organisations, campaigns, communities and other relevant actors.

  • Assessing whether an influencer's audience composition and network relationships align with organisational objectives, values, communication requirements and risk tolerance.

Module 5: Reputation Risk Assessment and Scoring

  • Developing practical risk frameworks that classify influencers according to severity, likelihood, relevance, evidence strength and potential organisational impact.

  • Creating weighted assessment criteria covering content, affiliations, conduct, audience quality, credibility, controversy history and partnership-specific exposure.

  • Applying confidence levels and evidence ratings so that decision-makers can distinguish established findings from uncertain or developing information.

  • Establishing escalation thresholds and decision rules for approval, enhanced review, conditional engagement, monitoring or partnership rejection.

Module 6: AI-Assisted Influencer Screening and Intelligence

  • Applying natural language processing, semantic analysis, sentiment analysis and topic modelling to accelerate large-scale content screening and issue identification.

  • Using AI-assisted classification, entity recognition and anomaly detection to identify potentially significant patterns across large volumes of public information.

  • Exploring generative AI for research summarisation, screening reports, evidence organisation and preparation of decision-support materials with appropriate validation.

  • Managing AI limitations including hallucinations, fabricated references, source confusion, algorithmic bias, false positives, false negatives and inappropriate inference.

Module 7: Ethical, Privacy and Governance Considerations

  • Establishing responsible boundaries between legitimate professional due diligence and intrusive monitoring of personal or sensitive information.

  • Developing governance standards for data collection, access, retention, documentation, review, confidentiality and appropriate use of screening information.

  • Recognising risks of discriminatory assessment, contextual misinterpretation, automated profiling and unfair exclusion from professional opportunities.

  • Creating transparent internal policies that define responsibilities, approval authority, evidence standards, escalation routes and accountability for screening decisions.

Module 8: Due-Diligence Reporting and Stakeholder Decision-Making

  • Producing concise executive screening reports that communicate material findings, supporting evidence, uncertainty, potential impact and recommended actions.

  • Presenting reputational concerns objectively without exaggeration, unsupported conclusions or language that converts allegations into established facts.

  • Developing standardised checklists, risk matrices, evidence logs, reporting templates and decision records that support consistent organisational practice.

  • Establishing performance measures for screening quality, review efficiency, risk detection, false positives, response times and governance compliance.

  • Creating continuous-improvement processes that update screening criteria, AI-assisted methods, risk taxonomies and governance controls as the influencer environment evolves.
