Introduction

Effective humanitarian response relies heavily on the availability of accurate, timely, and actionable information. In crisis-affected environments, where needs are urgent and resources are limited, robust information management systems and geospatial mapping tools provide the foundation for evidence-based decision-making. This course, Humanitarian Information Management and GIS Mapping, equips participants with the skills to collect, analyze, visualize, and use data to enhance humanitarian operations.

Participants will learn how Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and data management approaches strengthen humanitarian coordination by enabling rapid assessment, resource allocation, and risk analysis. The training highlights the role of GIS mapping in improving situational awareness, tracking displacement, mapping hazards, and supporting logistics in emergencies.

The course also emphasizes the integration of humanitarian information management (HIM) frameworks with participatory approaches to ensure affected populations’ needs are effectively represented. Learners will explore innovative practices such as mobile data collection, remote sensing, big data analytics, and open-source mapping platforms that drive modern humanitarian action.

Special attention will be given to challenges such as data quality, protection, and ethical use in fragile contexts. Participants will develop skills in managing sensitive data responsibly, safeguarding confidentiality, and ensuring ethical standards in humanitarian information systems.

Emerging trends such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) in disaster analytics, drone-based mapping, and geospatial modeling for anticipatory action will also be explored. These forward-looking approaches prepare participants to use cutting-edge tools for crisis preparedness, response, and resilience building.

By the end of the training, learners will be equipped to design, implement, and manage humanitarian information systems and GIS tools that support evidence-driven decision-making, coordination, and accountability in crisis settings.
