Course Introduction
Human Resource Management for Non-HR Managers Course is designed to equip managers and supervisors with the practical people-management knowledge required to handle everyday employee responsibilities effectively. While HR professionals provide specialist guidance, managers are directly responsible for managing performance, supporting employees, communicating expectations, addressing workplace concerns, and creating conditions in which people can contribute successfully.
The course provides a practical understanding of key human resource management principles from the perspective of managers who are not HR specialists. Participants will explore the employee lifecycle, workforce planning, recruitment involvement, onboarding, performance management, employee development, workplace conduct, engagement, retention, and effective employee relations while understanding where managerial responsibilities intersect with HR policies and professional advice.
Effective people management requires managers to make fair, consistent, and well-informed decisions. The programme therefore develops practical capabilities in setting expectations, providing feedback, documenting performance issues, conducting effective conversations, handling grievances appropriately, managing absence, supporting employee wellbeing, and recognizing potential workplace risks. Participants will also learn how to distinguish situations that can be managed directly from those requiring timely HR escalation.
Modern workplaces are becoming increasingly diverse, flexible, digital, and employee-centred, creating new responsibilities for managers. Hybrid work, multigenerational teams, changing employee expectations, psychological safety, inclusion, digital communication, and evolving approaches to workplace flexibility all influence how managers lead people. The course examines these developments while emphasizing practical approaches that promote fairness, accountability, engagement, and productive working relationships.
Technology is also transforming human resource management through artificial intelligence, people analytics, automated recruitment tools, digital performance platforms, employee self-service systems, and workforce analytics. Participants will examine the opportunities and risks associated with these developments, including data privacy, algorithmic bias, ethical use of employee information, technology-enabled monitoring, and the importance of maintaining human judgement when applying digital HR solutions.
Through practical case studies, management scenarios, discussions, role plays, exercises, and workplace applications, participants will build confidence in handling common people-management responsibilities. By the end of the course, managers will be better prepared to work effectively with HR specialists, manage employees fairly and consistently, identify people-related risks, improve team performance, and contribute to a positive and legally responsible workplace culture.
