Course Introduction
Human resource management in NGOs and development organizations requires specialized approaches that balance organizational sustainability, donor requirements, mission-driven objectives, and effective workforce management. This comprehensive training course equips HR professionals, NGO managers, and development practitioners with practical skills to design and implement HR systems that support humanitarian goals, organizational effectiveness, employee engagement, and impactful programme delivery.
NGOs and development organizations operate within unique environments characterized by project-based work, diverse teams, donor compliance requirements, volunteer engagement, and rapidly changing operational contexts. This course provides participants with practical approaches for managing recruitment, workforce planning, performance management, employee relations, talent development, and HR governance while ensuring alignment with organizational missions and development objectives.
The programme explores the strategic role of HR in strengthening NGO capacity by focusing on people management practices that improve organizational resilience and programme effectiveness. Participants will learn how to develop HR policies, manage diverse workforces, support employee wellbeing, build organizational capacity, and establish systems that promote accountability, transparency, and sustainable development outcomes.
Modern NGOs face emerging workforce challenges including remote programme implementation, digital transformation, humanitarian crises, safeguarding requirements, diversity and inclusion expectations, employee wellbeing concerns, and increased donor accountability. This course addresses these issues by providing participants with innovative HR approaches that support adaptable, ethical, and high-performing development organizations.
Participants will develop practical competencies in NGO recruitment, competency-based HR management, volunteer coordination, performance systems, safeguarding practices, labour compliance, workforce development, and organizational culture enhancement. Through practical exercises, case studies, and development-sector examples, participants will gain the ability to create HR solutions that respond effectively to the unique needs of NGOs and international development organizations.
By the end of this five-day programme, participants will have the knowledge, tools, and confidence to strengthen HR functions within NGOs and development organizations, improve workforce effectiveness, enhance employee engagement, support organizational growth, and contribute to successful delivery of development and humanitarian programmes.
