Course Introduction

The High-Frequency Data Analysis and Nowcasting Training Course provides a practical framework for analyzing rapidly released economic, financial, business, operational, and alternative data to generate timely estimates of current economic conditions. Participants learn how high-frequency indicators can complement conventional statistics that are released with significant delays, enabling analysts to monitor changing conditions and provide more timely evidence for policy, planning, investment, and strategic decision-making.

The course explores the complete analytical workflow for high-frequency datasets, from data acquisition and quality assessment through transformation, synchronization, modeling, visualization, and interpretation. Participants examine daily, weekly, monthly, intraday, transaction-level, and other frequently updated data while addressing challenges such as irregular observations, mixed frequencies, seasonal patterns, calendar effects, missing values, revisions, outliers, asynchronous releases, and changing measurement definitions.

A central component of the programme is nowcasting, which involves estimating current or very recent economic conditions before official statistics become available. Participants learn how to construct nowcasting frameworks using dynamic factor models, bridge equations, mixed-frequency regression, vector autoregression, state-space approaches, and other suitable methods. Emphasis is placed on selecting indicators that provide useful information about economic activity and integrating them systematically into timely forecasting workflows.

The training also examines real-time economic monitoring across areas such as inflation, GDP, employment, consumer activity, trade, industrial production, mobility, financial markets, energy consumption, business activity, and supply-chain conditions. Participants learn how to interpret high-frequency movements without confusing short-term volatility with persistent economic changes. Practical exercises emphasize data visualization, signal extraction, model diagnostics, forecast updating, and communication of nowcast uncertainty to technical and non-technical audiences.

Emerging technologies and alternative data sources are incorporated throughout the course. These include web-based indicators, electronic transactions, satellite-derived measures, mobility information, online prices, digital activity indicators, financial market data, machine learning techniques, automated data pipelines, and AI-assisted analytics. Participants consider the analytical value and limitations of these sources, including representativeness, data access, revisions, privacy, methodological consistency, algorithmic bias, model drift, and the risk of generating misleading signals from rapidly changing data.

By the end of the training, participants will be equipped to design and implement practical high-frequency monitoring and nowcasting systems that support timely economic and policy analysis. The course combines statistical concepts, econometric modeling, data engineering principles, forecast evaluation, visualization, scenario analysis, and applied case studies, enabling participants to move from raw high-frequency observations to transparent, evidence-based estimates of current conditions.
