Course Introduction

Data center cooling systems are essential to maintaining the thermal stability, equipment reliability, and operational continuity of modern digital infrastructure. As computing density increases and energy efficiency becomes a strategic priority, organizations are under growing pressure to modernize cooling infrastructure, reduce electricity consumption, improve water efficiency, and demonstrate measurable sustainability improvements. The Green Data Center Cooling System Retrofit and Performance Verification Intensive Course provides a structured approach to assessing existing cooling installations, selecting retrofit technologies, planning implementation, and verifying operational performance after upgrades. Participants will learn how to connect engineering improvements with energy performance indicators, reliability requirements, financial considerations, and environmental objectives while maintaining the availability of critical computing services.

Retrofitting an operational data center presents challenges that differ significantly from designing a new facility. Existing buildings may have constrained equipment layouts, aging chillers, inefficient air distribution, poorly configured containment, inadequate instrumentation, limited electrical capacity, and cooling systems that no longer match current server workloads. Implementing changes without understanding these conditions can increase operational risk, disrupt maintenance access, or produce disappointing efficiency gains. This course examines methods for conducting cooling infrastructure assessments, reviewing historical energy and temperature data, identifying airflow restrictions, evaluating cooling capacity, and establishing reliable baseline conditions. Participants will explore how to prioritize retrofit opportunities according to expected savings, implementation complexity, operational risk, equipment compatibility, and the need to maintain service continuity.

Green cooling retrofits can involve a combination of mechanical, electrical, controls, and facility improvements. These may include high-efficiency chillers, variable-speed pumps and fans, optimized chilled-water distribution, improved air containment, cooling tower upgrades, economizers, heat exchangers, direct liquid cooling, rear-door heat exchangers, and advanced control systems. The appropriate solution depends on server heat loads, rack density, climate conditions, humidity requirements, available water resources, facility design, and existing infrastructure. Participants will examine the engineering principles behind these technologies and learn how to assess their suitability through thermal analysis, hydraulic calculations, airflow evaluation, equipment selection, and lifecycle cost comparisons. The course emphasizes integrated design decisions rather than isolated equipment replacements, helping participants identify improvements that deliver meaningful performance gains without introducing unacceptable reliability risks.

Performance verification is critical because installed equipment efficiency does not automatically translate into whole-facility energy savings. Chiller performance, pump and fan power, air distribution, cooling setpoints, control sequences, server utilization, weather conditions, and facility operating practices all influence overall results. Participants will learn how to establish measurement boundaries, select appropriate instrumentation, validate sensor accuracy, develop energy baselines, and compare pre-retrofit and post-retrofit performance under representative conditions. The course explores key indicators such as Power Usage Effectiveness, cooling system energy consumption, cooling capacity utilization, temperature compliance, airflow effectiveness, and water-related efficiency measures where applicable. It also addresses measurement uncertainty, weather and workload normalization, seasonal variation, data quality, and the importance of documenting assumptions when reporting energy savings or environmental benefits.

A successful cooling retrofit must preserve operational resilience throughout design, construction, commissioning, and ongoing operation. Cooling equipment changes can affect redundancy, maintenance windows, control interactions, electrical loading, water systems, and the ability to manage abnormal operating conditions. Participants will examine implementation strategies for live facilities, including phased installation, temporary cooling arrangements, rollback planning, change control, contractor coordination, and risk-based commissioning. They will also explore the role of building management systems, data center infrastructure management platforms, automated fault detection, predictive maintenance, and digital analytics in improving cooling performance over time. Cybersecurity, control-system access, equipment interoperability, spare-part availability, and vendor support arrangements are considered as essential elements of a sustainable retrofit programme.

By completing the Green Data Center Cooling System Retrofit and Performance Verification Intensive Course, participants will be equipped to manage cooling improvement initiatives from initial assessment through engineering design, implementation, commissioning, and verified performance reporting. They will develop practical capabilities in thermal diagnostics, energy analysis, technology evaluation, retrofit planning, operational risk management, control optimization, measurement and verification, and lifecycle performance improvement. The programme supports professionals seeking to reduce cooling energy demand, improve thermal stability, manage water and carbon impacts, strengthen infrastructure resilience, and demonstrate credible sustainability outcomes without compromising the availability or performance of critical data center services.
