Course Introduction

Urban areas are at the forefront of climate change impacts, experiencing rising temperatures, flooding, air pollution, and infrastructure stress. This course introduces the concept of green cities and urban climate resilience, focusing on how sustainable planning can transform cities into adaptive, livable, and low-carbon environments.

As global urban populations continue to expand, cities face increasing pressure on housing, transport systems, water supply, and energy demand. Integrating climate resilience into urban planning is no longer optional but essential for safeguarding communities and ensuring long-term sustainability.

This course explores nature-based solutions, green infrastructure, and climate-smart urban design strategies that reduce vulnerability to climate hazards. Participants will learn how parks, wetlands, urban forests, and permeable surfaces contribute to cooling cities and managing stormwater.

Special emphasis is placed on urban climate risks such as heat islands, flooding, sea-level rise, and air quality degradation. The training equips learners with tools to assess risks and design adaptive responses that strengthen urban systems against climate shocks.
