Introduction

The Green and Climate Finance for Microfinance Training Course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and tools to integrate environmental sustainability and climate resilience into microfinance operations. As the effects of climate change increasingly affect low-income populations and vulnerable sectors, microfinance institutions (MFIs) play a crucial role in promoting sustainable livelihoods, supporting green enterprises, and financing adaptation and mitigation initiatives.

This course introduces participants to the principles, mechanisms, and financial instruments of green and climate finance. It highlights how MFIs can leverage these tools to promote environmentally responsible lending, reduce climate risks, and unlock new financing opportunities. Participants will explore the intersection of financial inclusion, environmental sustainability, and climate action, developing an understanding of how green finance contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and national climate commitments.

The program delves into the design and implementation of green financial products such as clean energy loans, water conservation financing, climate-smart agriculture products, and eco-housing schemes. It also examines the use of digital innovations and partnerships to enhance outreach and effectiveness in delivering green finance at the grassroots level.

Participants will learn how to access and mobilize climate finance through international funds, development finance institutions, impact investors, and blended finance models. Case studies from across regions will showcase best practices and successful green microfinance programs that have driven both environmental and financial impact.

The course further explores risk management strategies, measurement frameworks, and reporting tools that allow MFIs to integrate environmental and social safeguards into their operations. Participants will learn to apply green taxonomy frameworks and align institutional policies with global climate finance standards.

By the end of the training, participants will have the capacity to develop, implement, and manage climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable microfinance strategies that enhance institutional performance, empower communities, and contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive economy.
