Course Introduction
Cloud computing is increasingly becoming a critical component of modern government technology infrastructure, enabling public institutions to access scalable computing, storage, applications, platforms, analytics, and digital services without relying exclusively on traditional on-premises environments. Effective cloud administration requires strong technical governance, service management, security, financial controls, operational procedures, and institutional capabilities. This course provides a practical framework for managing cloud services in government environments while aligning technology investments with public-sector priorities and regulatory obligations.
Government institutions often operate complex technology environments containing legacy applications, modern digital platforms, sensitive information, shared services, and mission-critical systems. Moving these workloads to cloud environments requires careful assessment of applications, data, dependencies, security requirements, service levels, costs, interoperability, and business continuity. The programme covers major cloud service models and deployment approaches, including infrastructure as a service, platform as a service, software as a service, public cloud, private cloud, hybrid cloud, and multicloud environments. Participants will examine cloud architecture, identity and access management, networking, storage, backup, monitoring, availability, configuration management, workload optimization, disaster recovery, and service continuity. Cloud management extends beyond technical administration. Public institutions must establish governance frameworks covering ownership, accountability, procurement, vendor management, data classification, privacy, cybersecurity, architecture, service levels, financial management, and risk. Participants will explore cloud policies, governance boards, landing zones, standards, operating models, shared responsibilities, supplier oversight, and assurance mechanisms that help institutions maintain control over cloud environments while taking advantage of cloud capabilities.
Cloud economics is another major consideration for government organizations. Consumption-based pricing, subscriptions, reserved capacity, data-transfer charges, storage growth, software licensing, and multiple cloud environments can create unpredictable expenditure if not properly managed. Participants will examine FinOps principles, cloud budgeting, cost allocation, usage monitoring, resource optimization, forecasting, and value realization. Emerging approaches involving automated cost optimization, AI-assisted cloud management, serverless computing, cloud-native architectures, and intelligent workload placement will also be considered.
