Introduction

As spatial data becomes increasingly vital for planning, development, and informed decision-making, open-source tools such as QGIS offer professionals and organizations a powerful, flexible, and cost-effective solution for managing and analyzing geographic information. The GIS Mapping and Spatial Data Analysis using QGIS Course is designed to equip participants with practical skills in spatial data management, visualization, and analysis using QGIS one of the most widely used free and open-source GIS platforms.

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), focusing on how to use QGIS for real-world spatial problem-solving. Participants will learn how to collect, import, clean, and manage geospatial data; create high-quality maps; perform essential spatial analysis functions such as buffering, overlay, and geocoding; and integrate data from various sources, including GPS and mobile collection tools. A strong emphasis is placed on hands-on exercises and real-world case studies relevant to multiple sectors such as agriculture, health, environment, urban planning, and disaster management.

As the course progresses, learners will also explore advanced features of QGIS, including raster analysis, terrain modeling, and plugin-based extensions for customized applications. Participants will be guided through designing workflows that automate GIS processes and enhance efficiency using tools like the QGIS Graphical Modeler. Additionally, they will be introduced to cartographic principles and web mapping concepts to effectively communicate spatial data through visual storytelling.

By the end of the course, participants will have gained both theoretical understanding and applied experience in using QGIS for mapping and spatial data analysis. Whether new to GIS or looking to deepen their skills in an open-source environment, learners will emerge with the tools and confidence to use QGIS for informed decision-making and spatial insight in their respective fields.

Who Should Attend?

This course is suitable to:

·       Development practitioners and project managers involved in spatial planning, monitoring, and evaluation

·       Environmental scientists and conservationists working on land use, biodiversity, and natural resource management

·       Urban and regional planners who require spatial tools for infrastructure and land development projects

·       Public health and epidemiology professionals involved in disease mapping and health service analysis

·       Agricultural specialists and rural development officers monitoring crop patterns, irrigation, and land productivity
