Course Introduction

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become indispensable in analyzing, visualizing, and addressing complex socio-economic challenges. Poverty mapping and social impact assessment are critical tools for governments, NGOs, researchers, and development practitioners who seek to design evidence-based policies and interventions that improve livelihoods and promote equity.

This course on GIS in Social Impact and Poverty Mapping equips participants with both the technical and conceptual skills necessary to apply spatial analysis for social development planning. By integrating geospatial data with socio-economic indicators, participants will learn to uncover patterns of inequality, identify vulnerable populations, and support targeted poverty reduction strategies.

The course emphasizes the use of GIS not just as a mapping tool, but as a powerful decision-support system. Participants will learn how to combine census data, household surveys, remote sensing, and big data sources to generate detailed poverty and vulnerability maps that guide effective policy-making and resource allocation.

In addition to technical aspects, the training covers the socio-political dimensions of poverty mapping, including ethics, governance, and data equity. Learners will be exposed to case studies from developing and developed regions, highlighting best practices and challenges in applying GIS for social impact.

Hands-on training will be conducted using leading platforms such as QGIS, ArcGIS, Google Earth Engine, and open data repositories. Participants will gain practical skills in data cleaning, visualization, spatial analysis, and model building, ensuring they can independently apply these techniques in their work.

By the end of the course, participants will have the capacity to design, implement, and evaluate poverty mapping projects that inform inclusive development, enhance accountability, and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
