Course Introduction

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are revolutionizing the way governments, organizations, and businesses monitor carbon markets and climate finance projects. With the growing demand for accountability, transparency, and measurable impact in climate-related interventions, GIS provides the tools needed to track, evaluate, and communicate outcomes effectively.

This course offers participants in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in applying GIS to carbon trading, emissions reduction projects, and climate finance mechanisms. Learners will gain insights into how geospatial data supports carbon accounting, project validation, and compliance with global climate frameworks.

Through practical exercises and case studies, participants will explore how GIS technologies enhance the design, monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) of carbon credit projects. They will also learn how geospatial analysis contributes to reducing risks, ensuring credibility, and strengthening investor confidence in carbon markets.

The training further examines the intersection of GIS with climate finance, equipping participants with skills to assess project locations, measure co-benefits, and track the flow of funds across diverse climate adaptation and mitigation initiatives. By integrating spatial data with financial and policy frameworks, GIS fosters more effective planning and monitoring.

Participants will also be exposed to emerging innovations such as Earth Observation (EO), artificial intelligence, blockchain-enabled carbon credit systems, and other advanced tools that are shaping the future of carbon markets and climate finance monitoring.

By the end of the course, learners will be equipped to apply GIS in supporting transparent, efficient, and impactful climate finance projects, while also contributing to global sustainability, low-carbon transitions, and the achievement of the Paris Agreement goals.

Who Should Attend

  • Climate finance practitioners and project managers
  • Environmental policy makers and government agencies
  • GIS and remote sensing professionals in the climate sector
  • NGO and development agency staff managing climate funds
  • Private sector actors in carbon trading and offsetting projects
  • Academics and researchers in climate change and sustainability
  • Consultants in renewable energy and environmental planning

Duration

5 days

Course Objectives

By the end of this course the participants will be able to:

·       Equip participants with a strong foundational understanding of GIS concepts, QGIS interface navigation, spatial data structures, and effective layer management for climate and carbon-related applications.

·       Enable learners to confidently source, load, organize, and explore diverse geospatial datasets, including vector and raster data, relevant to carbon markets and climate finance projects.

·       Build practical competence in GIS symbology, visualization, labeling, and cartographic techniques to clearly communicate spatial patterns related to land use, emissions, and environmental change.

·       Strengthen participants’ ability to perform core spatial analysis operations such as selection, extraction, joins, buffering, clipping, union, dissolve, and reprojection for carbon accounting and project monitoring.

·       Develop a solid understanding of remote sensing fundamentals, including sensor types, data acquisition, and spatial, spectral, and temporal resolution for environmental and climate analysis.

·       Train participants in satellite image preprocessing techniques, including radiometric and spectral corrections, to ensure accuracy and reliability in land cover and vegetation assessments.

·       Enable effective calculation and interpretation of vegetation indices such as NDVI, EVI, and SAVI for monitoring biomass, forest health, and carbon sequestration potential.

·       Build practical skills in land use and land cover (LULC) classification, applying both supervised and unsupervised classification techniques for climate finance and carbon market reporting.

·       Equip learners with the ability to conduct accuracy assessment, validation, and change detection analysis to monitor deforestation, forest degradation, and land cover dynamics over time.

·       Enhance participants’ capacity to interpret, visualize, and present LULC and change detection results in a way that supports evidence-based decision-making, MRV frameworks, and climate finance reporting requirements.
