Course Introduction

Electoral boundary mapping plays a critical role in ensuring fair political representation, transparent governance, and democratic integrity. With growing complexities in population distribution, migration, and administrative reforms, advanced geospatial tools are vital for boundary delimitation and political geography studies.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have transformed how electoral boundaries are drawn, analyzed, and monitored. By combining spatial data with demographic and political information, GIS provides decision-makers with accurate, evidence-based insights to improve electoral fairness and efficiency.

This course equips participants with the skills to apply GIS in electoral boundary mapping, political geography, and demographic analysis. It covers technical approaches, data integration, spatial modeling, and policy implications. Participants will engage with real-world datasets and case studies to understand the intersection of spatial analysis, governance, and democracy.

The program emphasizes how GIS can be used to minimize gerrymandering, enhance voter representation, and promote inclusivity. It also explores the role of GIS in analyzing voter accessibility, political participation, and socio-spatial inequalities.

Hands-on training will focus on boundary creation, demographic overlays, and visualization techniques using GIS software and open-source platforms. Advanced modules will address redistricting challenges, the politics of space, and the use of spatial big data in electoral planning.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design, analyze, and communicate electoral maps that are accurate, transparent, and socially just, contributing to stronger democratic processes and governance systems.
