Course Introduction

Watershed management is a critical approach to sustainable water resource planning, focusing on the integrated management of land, water, and related resources within a drainage basin. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide powerful tools for analyzing watershed characteristics, hydrological processes, and land use interactions. This course equips participants with practical GIS skills to support effective watershed planning and management.

Growing pressure on freshwater resources due to population growth, climate change, deforestation, and land degradation has made watershed management more important than ever. Effective decision-making requires spatially accurate data and analytical tools that can model water flow, identify erosion-prone areas, and assess land-water interactions. GIS plays a central role in integrating these datasets for sustainable watershed planning.

Participants will learn how to delineate watersheds, analyze terrain characteristics, and model hydrological processes using GIS and remote sensing data. The training focuses on practical applications such as runoff estimation, soil erosion assessment, water quality monitoring, and land suitability analysis within watershed boundaries.

The course also emphasizes ecosystem-based watershed management approaches, highlighting the interconnection between upstream and downstream activities. Participants will explore how land use changes affect water availability, sedimentation, and flood risks, enabling them to design integrated watershed conservation strategies.

Emerging technologies such as high-resolution satellite imagery, LiDAR, hydrological modeling software, AI-based prediction systems, and cloud GIS platforms are transforming watershed management practices. Participants will gain exposure to these innovations and learn how to incorporate them into real-world watershed planning projects.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to independently conduct watershed delineation, perform spatial hydrological analysis, and develop GIS-based watershed management plans that support sustainable water resource governance and environmental conservation.
