Introduction

Water is one of the most vital yet increasingly scarce natural resources, and its sustainable management is essential for human survival, economic development, and ecosystem health. In the face of growing challenges such as climate change, population growth, and pollution, the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has become indispensable in supporting effective planning, monitoring, and decision-making in water resource management. The GIS for Water Resource Management Course is designed to equip professionals with the practical skills and knowledge to apply GIS and remote sensing tools in managing surface and groundwater resources efficiently and sustainably.

This course offers a comprehensive overview of how spatial data and geospatial technologies can be used to analyze hydrological systems, monitor water quality and quantity, model watersheds, and identify vulnerable areas to flooding and drought. Participants will learn how to collect, manage, and interpret spatial data using GIS software such as ArcGIS and QGIS, while also integrating remote sensing data for enhanced analysis and forecasting.

Through practical exercises, real-world case studies, and project-based learning, participants will gain hands-on experience in conducting watershed delineation, mapping groundwater potential zones, planning irrigation schemes, and creating thematic maps to support informed decision-making. The course will also explore participatory mapping approaches and the role of GIS in promoting transparency, accountability, and community involvement in water governance.

Whether working in water supply, agriculture, urban planning, environmental protection, or disaster preparedness, participants will leave the course with the tools and confidence to apply GIS in solving complex water resource challenges. This course is ideal for professionals seeking to enhance their technical capacity and contribute to more resilient and sustainable water management systems.

Who Should Attend?

This course is suitable to:

·       Water resource engineers and hydrologists involved in surface and groundwater analysis

·       Environmental and natural resource managers seeking to integrate GIS in water monitoring and planning

·       Irrigation and agricultural planners working on efficient water use in farming systems

·       GIS analysts and data managers supporting hydrological and environmental projects

·       Urban and regional planners dealing with water supply, drainage, and flood management

·       Disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation specialists focused on drought and flood vulnerability

·       Staff from NGOs, government agencies, and donor organizations working in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) or environmental programs

·       Researchers in water resource management, geography, environmental science, or related fields

Duration

5 days

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, the participant should be able to:

·       Understand the fundamental principles of GIS and remote sensing and their application in water resource management.

·       Collect, manage, and analyze spatial data related to surface and groundwater systems using open-source GIS tools such as QGIS.

·       Apply GIS techniques for watershed analysis, hydrological modeling, and water flow mapping, including delineation of catchment areas and drainage networks.

·       Use satellite imagery and remote sensing data to monitor water bodies, assess drought and flood conditions, and evaluate water quality indicators.

·       Conduct suitability analysis for irrigation planning and groundwater exploration using multi-criteria spatial analysis.

·       Develop thematic maps and visualizations to support water resource planning, monitoring, and reporting for various stakeholders.

·       Apply participatory GIS methods and mobile data collection tools to incorporate community input and field data into water-related decision-making.

·       Assess and map water-related risks, such as flood-prone zones, drought vulnerability, and pollution hotspots.

·       Design and implement GIS-supported decision support systems (DSS) for integrated water resource management and policy development.

·       Develop practical, context-specific action plans for integrating GIS in water projects within government, NGO, or institutional frameworks.
